Response to BIS call for ideas for the National Innovation Plan

We have responded to a call from the UK Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) for ideas for the National Innovation Plan.

Our response highlights the crucial role of universities in national innovation across our key activities of research, education and knowledge exchange – particularly in terms of developing enterprising talent.

We also emphasise the central role universities are taking in open data, the high return on investment in higher education infrastructure and the critical underpinning of excellent research to leveraging private sector investment.

The call for ideas took a narrow view of the role of universities in national innovation, so we have called on BIS to open a dialogue with universities in order to better reflect the current role, and potential, of universities in this plan.
