Universities Scotland submission to consultation on a Workplace Parking Levy

Universities Scotland has submitted evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee to inform its inquiry into the Workplace Parking Levy (WPL). The Committee has invited views on the policy as part of their consideration of the Transport (Scotland) Bill, which contains amendments proposing the introduction of a WPL.

Our submission recognises that whilst a WPL is being brought forward by the Scottish Government to tackle climate change, we nevertheless have concerns over the cost implications for universities as employers. Given the scope for discretion in its implementation by local authorities, we’re unable to make a sector-wide estimate of the cost although in the context of a real terms reduction in public funding to universities, the additional financial burden on institutions could be significant.
