Generative AI in Curriculum & Assessment

In 2025 the Universities Scotland Learning and Teaching Committee established the Scottish Universities Working Group on Generative AI in Curriculum and Assessment to review current practice associated with Generative AI in curriculum and assessment and subsequently to develop a framework for Generative AI in assessment and curriculum for the Scottish HE sector. Consisting of members invited from all Scottish Higher Education institutes, the remit of the group was to:

• identify the current approach being taken by each Scottish Higher Education Institute in response to the emergence of Generative AI.
• provide a sector wide overview of curriculum and assessment work undertaken in response to Generative AI.
• identify examples of good practice in Generative AI use within the curriculum and assessment and in mitigating concerns associated with academic integrity.
• reflect as to where enhancements to the use of Generative AI in the curriculum and/or assessment can bring about synergistic benefits to other areas of education practice (inclusivity, student wellbeing, engagement etc.)
• develop a broad framework/set of principles that facilitates embedding good practice in Generative AI use within the curriculum and assessment across the Scottish HE sector.
• identify education community members beyond HE (e.g. SQA, technology companies) that could be engaged in developing a future Scotland-wide framework for the use of Generative AI in the curriculum and assessment.

The framework for Generative AI in assessment and curriculum was designed to function synergistically with the principles set out in the Scottish Tertiary Education statement on the use of generative artificial intelligence (SCAITEN). Founding members of SCIATEN, Rosemarie McIlwhan and Louise Drumm were members of the assessment and curriculum working group and the lead for the working group, Gerald Prescott, was also a member of SCIATEN.
