Scottish Government Cabinet and Ministers announced

Universities Scotland has welcomed the recent Cabinet appointments, offering congratulations to those taking up new ministerial roles and highlighting the importance of continued collaboration between Government and the higher education sector.

Professor James Miller, Convener of Universities Scotland, said:

“Congratulations to John Swinney on being sworn in as First Minister, to Jenny Gilruth for her appointment as Deputy First Minister, and to all those joining or rejoining the Cabinet yesterday.

“Congratulations in particular to Màiri McAllan and Ben Macpherson, who we know will bring a strong focus on delivery to their roles.”

Professor Miller also emphasised the significance of recent changes within ministerial portfolios, particularly the increased focus on innovation and technology within tertiary education:

“The shift in focus within Minister Macpherson’s portfolio, to put innovation and technology with tertiary education, is a welcome signal about the vital contribution universities make to Scotland’s economy through their research and innovation, as well as skills and education.

“We look forward to working with Ben, Màiri and others across the Cabinet to maximise the opportunities this creates.”
