New appointments to Universities Scotland’s Executive Group and Committee Conveners

Universities Scotland is delighted to confirm two changes to our Executive Group and wider Committee Convenerships, coinciding with the new academic year.

Martin Boyle, Principal of the Open University in Scotland has been appointed Vice Convener, to serve a two-year term, supporting Professor James Miller in the role of Convener and Professor Sue Rigby of Edinburgh Napier University as Vice Convener.

Professor Mairi Watson, Principal and Vice Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University, has been appointed Convener of Universities Scotland’s Learning and Teaching Committee and as such takes a lead for the sector on all policy matters relating to teaching and assessment, skills development, quality assurance, widening access and ongoing education reform.

Martin Boyle and Professor Watson’s appointments are for a two-year period, with re-election possible for a second two-year term.

Martin Boyle takes over the role from Sir Paul Grice, Principal and Vice Chancellor of Queen Margaret University.

Professor Mairi takes over the role from Professor Steve Olivier who has served two consecutive terms as Committee Convener.

Commenting on the appointments, Professor James Miller said:

“I would like to thank Martin and Mairi for agreeing to take on these important roles with Universities Scotland. Both bring a wealth of experience, insight and commitment, and I am grateful for their willingness to contribute their time and expertise in support of the sector. I look forward to working with them as we continue to advance the collective interests of Scotland’s universities.”
